ELECTIVE COURSES

Within the obligatory module of the PhD curriculum, each doctoral student must choose elective specialization courses that are strictly related to his/her PhD topic and directly support the PhD research. These subjects must be selected individually by each doctoral student, in agreement with his/her supervisor.

During the Educational and Research Stage, in the first four semesters, PhD students must complete a minimum of 16 credits from optional courses to be eligible for the comprehensive exam. Optimally, it means 2 courses per semester, but the distribution is optional (there is no minimum or maximum number of courses per semester).

Requirements for the specialization courses:

  • The subjects should support the PhD topic
  • Required level: MSc, post-graduate, PhD, special engineering
  • The lecturer should hold a PhD degree
  • Accreditation is possible only for subjects that the Student has not studied before
  • Institutions: BME MSc specializations, BME special engineering specializations, BME doctoral schools, external institutions of higher education
  • Each course must be requested, even if it is on the list of accredited courses

REQUESTING PROCEDURE FOR OPTIONAL COURSES

The accreditation of the courses must be requested before course registration. The Council of the Doctoral School (DIT) can accredit the courses with 2, 1, or 0 credits in the Doctoral School (independently of their original credit number). The DIT considers each request individually based on the PhD student's research topic and the course level.

The submission of the optional course accreditation requests is usually at the end of the semester. For the exact dates, consult the Doctoral School/Dates, deadlines menu. The request form can be found on the Doctoral School's website (see Downloads). PhD students are informed of the submission deadlines and submission format each semester by email.

COURSE REGISTRATION

Course registration is done in Neptun. If this is not possible (e.g., due to unmet prerequisites), it is recommended to contact the course instructor in advance. Neptun registration can be completed by the department's administration offering the course.

If registration in Neptun is not possible (e.g., for courses from other universities), the course “Course in external institution ” must be registered instead. You must coordinate the details of completing the external course with the instructor, and at the end of the semester, the document titled “Certification – Completion of elective course” must be filled out.

FIRST GRADE PHD STUDENTS

First-year students cannot request optional courses before their first semester, as fall courses can be requested at the end of the previous spring semester. As a result, they can take courses and request them retrospectively at the end of the first semester. They are suggested to choose courses from the list of previously accredited courses.
